Dan Sheehan took a less direct route to the top than many Leinster and Ireland forwards. He came through Clongowes Wood College, then Dublin University and Lansdowne, building his game in school and AIL rugby before becoming one of the most explosive hookers in the professional game.

His schools record includes Clongowes Wood College's 2016 Leinster Schools Senior Cup campaign, where he was part of a side that reached the semi-final. He was not an instant headline academy star in the way some current internationals were, but that is part of what makes his profile interesting: his rise was built through physical development, club rugby and a sharp acceleration once he reached the Leinster senior environment.

Sheehan made an immediate impact at senior level. He scored two tries on his Leinster debut and quickly developed a reputation as a hooker with back-row athleticism, strong carrying ability and a remarkable strike rate near the line. From there he moved into the Ireland set-up and became one of the leading hookers in world rugby.
