Profile

Jimmy O'Brien's pathway is one of the clearest Kildare-to-Leinster stories in the squad. He came through Eadestown and Newbridge College before moving into UCD, Ireland Sevens, the Leinster Academy and the senior Leinster squad. His early school rugby was not as a settled outside back; he played scrum-half and out-half at different stages before becoming the versatile back Leinster and Ireland now use across the back three and midfield.

Newbridge College matters in his profile because it places him outside the traditional Dublin school pathway. O'Brien's development was built through a mix of school rugby, UCD, Sevens and provincial opportunity, rather than a straight line from a dominant Senior Cup programme into the academy.

His Ireland Sevens stage was central. Like Hugo Keenan, he used Sevens to sharpen his speed, conditioning, space-reading and one-on-one skills before becoming a high-value fifteen-a-side player. That detour helped shape the versatility that later became one of his main strengths.

By 2025/26, O'Brien is a senior Leinster back and Ireland international who can cover full-back, wing and centre. His profile links Newbridge College, UCD, Ireland Sevens, Leinster and senior Ireland, and sits as one of the best examples of a player whose adaptability became his route to the top.
