Joe McCarthy's pathway runs through New York, Blackrock College, Trinity, Ireland U20 and Leinster. Born in Manhattan and raised into the Irish system, he became one of the most physically imposing forwards in the current Leinster and Ireland group.

Blackrock College gave him the main schools rugby platform, and he then moved through Dublin University FC and Ireland U20 into the Leinster Academy. His senior Leinster breakthrough was built on the qualities that now define his game: size, aggression, carrying, defensive impact and the ability to change the tone of a forward battle.

McCarthy's Ireland rise has been rapid. He moved from underage and provincial prospect into a senior international lock and became a central figure in Ireland's second-row group. His physical profile is different from many Irish locks of the previous generation, which is part of why his arrival changed the feel of Ireland's pack.

By 2025/26, McCarthy is one of Leinster's key senior forwards and a central contract Ireland player.
