Profile

Rieko Ioane is the outlier in the current Leinster senior squad. His pathway is not Irish school, club and academy rugby, but one of the most high-profile New Zealand routes in the modern game: Auckland Grammar School, New Zealand Secondary Schools, All Blacks Sevens, the Blues and the All Blacks before a short-term Leinster spell.

Ioane came to prominence early. He captained New Zealand Secondary Schools in 2014, represented the All Blacks Sevens as a teenager and was part of the New Zealand Sevens squad at the Rio Olympics in 2016. From there he became a major figure for the Blues and the All Blacks, playing across centre and wing.

His Leinster role is different from the province's home-grown pathways. He is recorded in the 2025/26 squad as a short-term senior / injury-cover loan and overseas player. That should not be presented as a standard Leinster development story. Instead, it is a high-profile temporary senior squad addition, bringing All Blacks experience into the Leinster environment.

For the site, Ioane's profile is useful because it marks the difference between pathway-developed players and elite overseas additions. His links should point through Auckland Grammar School, the Blues, New Zealand representative sides and Leinster, while keeping his 2025/26 Leinster status clearly separate from academy or domestic development pathways.
