Profile

Tadhg Furlong's pathway is one of the strongest examples of a player coming from outside the Dublin schools system and reaching the very top of the game. He came through New Ross RFC and New Ross CBS in Wexford before moving into Clontarf RFC and the Leinster pathway. That route matters because it shows a different strand of Leinster development: local club rugby, school rugby outside the traditional Senior Cup powerhouses, senior club exposure, and then the professional front row.

Furlong made his senior Leinster debut in 2013 and has since become one of the defining tighthead props of his generation. His profile is built on elite scrummaging, but also on the handling, footwork and carrying that made him stand out from the usual front-row mould. He became central to Leinster, Ireland and the British & Irish Lions, with his Wexford roots remaining a major part of how his career is understood.

The Clontarf RFC link is important too. Before he was a Test-level tighthead, Furlong's pathway included senior club rugby at Castle Avenue, connecting him with one of the strongest AIL environments in Leinster. That gives his profile a clear line from New Ross RFC to Clontarf RFC, then on to Leinster, Ireland and the Lions.

By 2025/26, Furlong remains one of the senior leaders in the Leinster squad and an example of the long development curve required for props. His story is not just about natural talent; it is about a Wexford player moving through club and provincial structures into the most demanding position group in the game.
